I think only one of these is also part of my original Chunkster Challenge, which I set at five, but I think will end up more like ten...because other books I placed on this challenge and my top ten to start 2014 are also chunksters! And, I didn't have to decide my chunksters ahead of time, so if I get to these instead, it still counts! It's going to be an amazing reading year.
*The list was fixed after initial posting because I had only listed ten books plus two alternatives.
I'm so glad to see Middlesex on so many lists! And I'm really curious what you'll think of House of Leaves. It totally toyed with my brain when I read it in college and I really need to pick it up again.
ReplyDeleteMy brother bought me House of Leaves for Christmas in 2006 I think. He didn't read it, I think he just saw the format was different and thought it was cool to have as a book lover. But someone reviewed it recently and I honestly didn't hear of the book from anyone until then. I will make sure to review it!
DeleteHi Good luck with the challenge, some interesting books there.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I tried to mix it up with classics, well known, and lesser well knowns.
DeleteNice list! I really enjoyed Middlesex and Memoirs of a Geisha.
ReplyDeleteI put Memoirs on there because I've never heard a bad thing about it. And I'm really glad to see so many people glad to see Middlesex on two of my lists! Especially when it's all my favorite bloggers saying so!
DeleteGood luck with both challenges!
ReplyDeleteYou have some excellent books in that pile! And I still love the idea of the Chunkster challenge! Middlesex is one of the most incredible books ever written. It's brilliant. Hope you enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI hope I do too because it seems everyone is excited to see people listing it on their challenges! I think I'm going to read it next because it's the only book that is on all three of my lists I've made.
DeleteWe have a couple of books in common on our lists! And I really enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha. I hope you do, too!
ReplyDeleteYes we do. And you have Geisha, a Life on your list, which I also have sitting on my shelf!
DeleteThe Story of Edgar Sawtelle is so, so good!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that! I heard about it just once, was able to get it cheap on a book swap site, but can't remember otherwise what drew me to it. So I'm just going to pick up and read!
DeleteMy challenge is to FINISH so many books I've started. There are so many great reads, I try to read them all at once! :)
ReplyDeleteI was doing that the last few weeks of December. I think I had four books going...one nonfiction on my Kindle, some Dickens's shorts, and two other books beginning.
DeleteEvery single book on that list has been recommended to me! I can't wait to read them with you. I have a ridiculous amount of chunksters to read myself. Best wishes to us both. I love the design of your blog by the way ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's a pretty good list, if I say so myself! Lol...the ones I have completely forgotten about are getting good comments from others, so I'm reassured it's going to be an enjoyable pile to read through! Best of luck - hope to discuss these with you!
DeleteAnd thanks about the blog design. I'm going to be doing some more improvements this year!
DeleteI loved Divergent! It was entertaining, and the trilogy was great.
ReplyDeleteHave you read The Interestings? I've heard a bunch of great things about it, but I was wondering if you read it.
No, I haven't. I think I recall reading a review where it was praised.
DeleteBest of luck! I haven't read any of the titles, but have long been intrigued by Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides.
ReplyDeleteMe too. I figured I'd better get around to it already!
DeleteI've only read Memoirs of a Geisha and The pearl, and I liked both very much.
ReplyDeleteI will also participate in this challenge, since I didn't get it in 2013, so this motivates me more to get it this year :))
Good luck with your challenge!
PS: I thought you had to chose 12 books + 2 alternates ¿¿??
Oh I think you're right! Well I guess these will be my 12 and I'll have to finish them! Thanks for calling my attention to that! Can't wait to see how we both do with this.
ReplyDeleteGreat list Jennine!! I'm still upset about loaning House of Leaves to my then boyfriend and never getting it back. It's a curious story...one that frightened me a bit. Good thing my now husband was living next door to me at the time so I could run over there for company. ;)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy these!! The Pearl is one I keep meaning to read as well.
Well, at least the book served a good purpose before disappearing! Lol
DeleteGood list!!! I think I am going to join this challenge, too, actually!
ReplyDeleteYea, it just makes sense! Thin out that TBR pile!
DeleteWhat a great variety of books. I'm not at all surprised to see Crime and Punishment listed as a chunkster but had no idea that Memoirs of a Geisha and Divergent qualified. I hope you like Memoirs as much as I did :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think Memoir of a Geisha qualifies as a Chunkster. The Divergent books just make it...just over the 450 page mark set by the rules of the challenge. I've always thought of books with 700+ pages as chunksters, so at 450, I've got lots of options!
DeleteOh, haha, I didn't realize that not all of your TBR books count for the chunkster challenge as well. I agree that 450 pages is not bad of a cutoff though :)
DeleteWonderful list of books! You can do it!
ReplyDeleteOoooo...House of Leaves! One of the most unusual books I've ever read. Not sure I could write a review of it bc I'm not sure I understood it when all was said and done.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to read Divergent as well- we should do a tag team review thing- or at the least link to each other's reviews. According to my 15 yr old niece it is the best book EVER. Does hyperbole run in the family? Maybe a bit!
House of Leaves has me very curious from all the different things I've heard about it. Tag team/links sounds like a plan! I'm definitely reading it by movie release time in March! Gotta love some well meaning hyperbole!
DeleteI've read a few of these. All are good choices. I'm currently reading The Things They Carried - so far I'm loving it.
ReplyDeleteThanks! The Things They Carried is wide read in high schools, so I figured I should probably have read it. Glad it's enjoyable too!
DeleteMemoirs of a Geisha has been on my list what seems like forever. I also want to read Memory Keeper's daughter and Divergent! Looks like we might be reading similar books in 2014!
ReplyDeleteThen I will definitely be looking for your reviews on them! I've been told to read Memoirs before seeing the movie by many book people. Have you seen the movie?
